Zovirax
Zovirax is an antiviral drug used to slow down the spread of herpes viruses. The active ingredient in Zovirax is acyclovir which is dispensed as tablets, capsules and an oral suspension.
Drug Uses
Zovirax is used to slow down the spread of the herpes viruses, e.g. cold sores, shingles, genital herpes, and chicken pox. Zovirax cannot cure herpes, but it brings relief to the unpleasant symptoms of the virus.
Zovirax is used to treat other medical conditions not listed in this information guide.
Dose
Zovirax must always be used as directed. Do not make adjustments to the dose before speaking to a doctor.
For best results, Zovirax should be taken as soon as symptoms of herpes occur, e.g. blistering, burning or tingling.
Zovirax should be taken with a full glass of water to ensure that the kidneys continue functioning correctly. Zovirax does not have to be taken with food but if the patient experiences stomach irritations, future doses should be taken with meals.
If using the oral suspension of Zovirax shake the bottle well before use. Use a proper medical measuring device to ensure that the correct dose is administered.
Missed Dose
If you miss a dose, it may be taken when you remember. However, do not take the missed dose near the time of the next scheduled dose. In this case, ignore the missed dose. Never double-up on a dose.
Warnings and Precautions
Do not use Zovirax if you are allergic to acyclovir.
Before using Zovirax, you must give your doctor full details of your medical history and other medications that you use. These include herbal medicines and vitamin supplements. Zovirax can react badly with some medications.
Zovirax is not likely to harm an unborn fetus so pregnant women are able to use this medication. Zovirax is passed into breast milk so women who are breast-feeding should use Zovirax with caution, under directions of a doctor.
Herpes can infect a baby during childbirth, therefore it is extremely important to prevent genital lesions during childbirth.
Before using Zovirax tell your doctor if you are allergic to any food preservatives or dyes. Also tell your doctor if you have kidney problems.
